Building Time Management
I would like to present on the bus ride simulation that I implemented into my nursing course. During this simulation, students in groups of five are given bus passes and must utilize the tools provided without instructor assistance to navigate between two different locations. The specific scenario I use focuses on social determinants of health, however, there are various skills students must apply in order to complete this simulation. Students must prioritize which bus to take, work together, and master time management in order to get to their destination on time. This simulation gives students an opportunity to develop team-building, time management, priority setting, and a lesson in community resources. Students may also have a better understanding of overcoming barriers, as this fosters an understanding for people who lack personal transportation.
Assignment by Design
While there may be considerable variation in assessment activities across disciplines, departments, programs and colleges, the Cycle of Assessment provides a unifying framework to organize assessment activities and to make decisions that lead to improvements in student learning. This session will lead participants through the Cycle of Assessment. Participants will gain working knowledge of each phase of the cycle and receive resources and activities to help with the development of an assessment plan for their discipline.
Supporting Military Students: A Green Zone Training Pilot
Green Zone training is a training designed to educate faculty and staff on the military student experience, and help military students adapt to the college environment. To empower Baker faculty to better support military-affiliated students, we are looking to host regular Green Zone trainings to help develop a network of trained military advocates across campuses. This is the first of what we hope will be many Green Zone training opportunities for faculty and staff, as we work to retain our standing as a military-friendly institution. Come learn and brainstorm with us!
Hospitality as a Pathway to Holistic Online Learning Experiences
In this session, we will explore how incorporating elements of hospitality can transform online programs into communities where students feel genuinely connected and engaged. Hospitality in this context is a holistic approach to online education, focusing on creating a nurturing, supportive experience for students throughout their academic journey.
During the session, attendees will learn practical strategies to embody the role of a "good host" in their online courses, encouraging students to be creators of knowledge rather than just consumers. Central to our discussion will be the application of Fink's Taxonomy of Significant Learning. This framework encourages the design of holistic learning experiences that foster the development of critical thinking, real-world application, integration of ideas, learning about oneself and others, and cultivating a lifelong passion for learning.
The goal is to create a holistic online learning experience where students feel part of the Baker community and are empowered to do meaningful work.
